Understanding Your Child's Early Development

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Dear parents,

Prince Court Medical Centre cordially invites you to a talk on “Early Childhood Development”. The development of the human brain involves many stages. While we like to think of ourselves as logical thinkers, research has proven that the emotional part of our brain seems to play an integral part in our life. Children are dependent on their parents for guidance as their stimulation and the environment that they provide will lay down the foundation in which they view the world.

Being aware as parents of the crucial role that we play may help us in having a society in which children can grow to live their life to the fullest.

Come and listen to the speakers impart invaluable information on how environment affects the development of a child from infant to toddler.

Take this opportunity to get all your questions answered by the experts.

For registration, please call 03 2160 0000 ext.2282 (Zeenat) or ext. 1115 (Aznida)

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Children enjoy activities that involve MaGiC, PuZzles and gAmEs. Thus an enjoyable and interesting way for learning problem solving is by solving recreational mathematics problems. Appropriate recreational problems stimulate intellectual curiosity, develop problem solving skills, promote discovery and thinking skills, as well as unleash creativity.

Would you like your child to be the brightest, happiest and most brilliant student in their schools excelling both academics and co-curricular activities? It starts from you because parents play an essential role in moulding the child to their wholeness.

This seminar is intended for both PARENTS/TEACHERS & CHILDREN (age 9 to 12 years). So bring them along! Join Teoh Poh Yew, a renowned Trainer in Mathematics and Creativity in a seminar entitled “Developing Creativity through MATHS MAGIC” on * 13th September 2009, 2pm - 4pm @ IDC Training House, Amcorp Trade Centre, Petaling Jaya

This seminar provides several secrets to lifetime enjoyment via FUN-da-MENTAL instructional skills: An enthralling, interactive experience that unravels the art of teaching and learning mathematics. A veritable recipe for success! Come and Learn! Play! Enjoy!

Tips for flashcards

Some additional tips on flashcards :)

1. The conditions required for flashing the flashcards are:
a. You are light-hearted, happy and joyous.
b. Your child is well-rested, happy and joyous.
c. A quiet environment, free of distractions. Clear the room if required. Switch off the TV, take the phone off hook, and minimize unnecessary sound eg. Transferring pagers and cellphones to silent mode.

2. Stop at a time when your child is still keen and interested in the flashings. It is important not to overdo the sessions. Never, never, never bore your child. Remember, he learns at least 50 times faster than you do!

3. Do not be afraid to teach long words. Long words pose no problems to your child and are in fact interesting and easily recognizable.

4. At the initial introductory learning sessions, avoid putting two words that look similar together, eg, ‘head’ and ‘hand’ to minimize possible confusion. (In the ‘look-say’ flashcard method, avoid arranging words phonetically like ‘cat’, ’bat’, ‘fat’, ‘sat’. It becomes boring after a time. English has too many foreign words to follow the phonetic way, eg. Choir, lingerie. Furthermore, operating the phonetic way activates only the left brain.) (There is no phonics in Chinese, the pictorial characters activate the right brain. So teach Chinese. Learning Chinese is a must in this 21st century.)

5. Arrange for your child to win. When your child wins, you win. Act positively by hugging, kissing, praising and motivating your child often. Keep saying ‘very good’ and ‘wow’. He loves to hear you say ‘wow’, ‘marvelous’, ‘fantastic’.

6. Do not underestimate your child’s learning ability. Teach with no stress. If you feel stressed, you are not doing it correctly, or it may be the wrong time or place.

7. Be flexible and creative, always present new arrangements; eg. By telling stories to your child as both of you progress. Let him make up his stories.

8. When you introduce new words, flash them fast. You may want to present a “problem solving” method by holding up 2 flashcards for your child to choose the correct one. If your child take more than 3 seconds, move or wave the card or give it away to him. If your child is right, celebrate! If the wrong card is chosen, present the right card.

Remember, this is not a test but an opportunity to learn. He is still a baby. Love him unconditionally. Do not spend time testing him. Teach him. You can explain the meanings of the words to your child. Keep it simple. You may wish to play the following games:
a. Place flashcards on the floor for your child to find eg. ‘mother’, ‘uncle’… Pass small items like coins, toy cars, to your child and say, “give this to ‘mother’, drive your toy cars to ‘uncle’.”
b. Hand over pictures for the child to match his flashcards, ‘dog’, ‘swim’, ‘apple’.
c. Teach the ‘memory train’ method by creating stories with flashcards, eg, “One day, a ‘yellow’ bird flew up a ‘tree’. It was singing because it likes to ‘sing’ and it was dancing because it likes to ‘dance’. A ‘horse’ was eating ‘grass’ below the ‘tree’. On seeing the ‘bird’, it started to ‘laugh’.” And invite your child to laugh crazy like a ‘horse’.

3 things to remember: teach fast, fast like a wind; present new things always; and do not test!!!

Creative teaching seminar

Sunday, August 2, 2009

I came to know that there will be a seminar held in Amcorp Trade Centre on 16th August 2009, giving out information about creative teaching, which I personally feel that it is useful to every parent.

In this 21st century era, parents and children alike need to constantly be growing, evolving and developing. A CREATIVE parent will be able to:
* stop correcting problems & start encouraging,
* concentrate more on what is right and less on what is wrong,
* see mistakes as opportunities for gaining experience and not as failures,
* acknowledge that children also have valuable ideas & the more ideas the better,
* realize that there are always better ways rather than doing things the same way,
* listen to child’s opinion in order to create a win-win situation for everyone!

The course named “The Art of Creative Teaching”, with the objectives as below:

-The importance of using meaningful set induction
-The art of telling stories
-Using humor to liven up the class
-Using magic to arouse interest, promote discovery and increase retention
-The importance of teaching aids
-The importance of excitement in teaching and learning
-Seeing things from children’s perspectives
-Teaching with love and concern
-How to motivate reluctant learners
-How to cater for gifted children
-How to overcome careless mistakes
-Turning failure into success
-Using magic to increase retention

This workshop is specially designed for Parents/Teachers who handle children aged 12 years and below.

*Fee includes Training Handouts, A pack of M-Wizy Magic Cards, 2 Tea Breaks & 1 Lunch.

Date: 16th Aug 2009 (Sun)
Time: 9am – 5pm
Venue: Amcorp Trade Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Leave me a comment with email address if you are interested, I will forward the details to you :)

Sharing - Effective Ways to use Flashcards

Recently, I've received some information about the effective way to teach your kids on flashcards. I find it useful for parents that are having flashcards at home. You can read the points as written below:

Tips for success in using the flashcards for creative, instantaneous learning:
1. Pick up any number of flashcards.
2. Present the flashcards rapidly to your child at arm’s length.
3. Showing the flashcards from the front to the back is okay, but the preferred method is to show them from the back to the front. (DIY – write the words on the top left hand corner of the back of the flashcards. Paste a small piece of scotch tape for easy thumbing and lifting up the flashcards.)
4. While flashing the flashcards, rapidly read the words out loud in a clear, high-pitched, enthusiastic voice. Be excited teaching! And be joyous all the time!
5. At the end of flashing, jumble up the flash cards. You may repeat the session any number of times. You may wish to wait for about 5 minutes although there is no harm doing it immediately. It is suggested to flash the flash cards in 3 sessions in one day. If your child does not want it, do not impose on him. Do not bribe him into doing it. Find another opportunity. All babies want to learn through play.
6. Always stop before your child wants to stop. This will keep your child’s eagerness, enthusiasm and expectation for the next session of flashing.
7. On the second day, retire 1 or any number of flashcards and replace it (or them) with the same number or any number of cards. Remember to be flexible and creative. Always let your child guide you as to what level his thirst is for learning at the moment. Chances are, your child will request to see the flashcards.
8. Do the same on the third day and onwards. The key to successful early learning is to be joyous about the whole process. Remember to smile, smile, smile!
9. At the end of every session, kiss and hug your child and exclaim how wonderful he is. Give him ‘high fives’! Tap on his shoulders, anchor him with all the positive messages. Programme into his subconscious that he is a super learner. And you leave to teach him. The word to use is ‘respect’ your child for he is superior to you. You are not superior to him in terms of learning.
